What is Sorrel?

Sorrel is more than a drink – Made from the deep crimson calyces of the hibiscus plant (Hibiscus Roselle/Sabdariffa), sorrel is transformed into a vibrant ruby red drink infused with spices and served chilled. Its brilliant deep color may catch your attention first, but its distinctive taste makes it memorable.

What Does Sorrel Taste Like?

Think bright and fruity, pleasantly tart and gently sweet, with a warm, aromatic finish.

Sorrel has a natural tang often compared to cranberry, but its character is distinctly its own. Traditional spices add warmth and complexity, creating a drink that is simultaneously refreshing, bold and beautifully fragrant.

Served ice-cold, it is a taste that invites another sip.

What’s In It?

At the heart of Sorrel is the roselle hibiscus plant—the source of its naturally striking red color and signature tart flavor. Traditional Jamaican preparations steep the sorrel with aromatic ingredients such as ginger and warm spices, then sweeten the infusion to balance its natural tartness.

Recipes vary from family to family. That is part of the tradition. At Roehampton, we take inspiration from those familiar Caribbean flavors to create a Sorrel that honors what generations have enjoyed while delivering the bold, refined experience we want to share today.

For many Jamaican families, Sorrel is inseparable from the holiday season.

As the holidays approach, sorrel begins appearing in kitchens and refrigerators, often prepared ahead so its flavors have time to deepen. It is poured at holiday dinners, offered to visitors, shared at family gatherings and served alongside the foods that define the season. For generations, a cold glass of Sorrel has meant more than simply having something to drink.

A Taste of Home. A Tradition Worth Sharing. A Taste of Roe.

The tradition may have begun at home, but Sorrel is made for gathering.

Its rich ruby color and distinctive flavor make it an elegant choice for holiday parties, corporate events, weddings, showers and celebrations. Serve it chilled over ice, pour it beautifully for guests, or transform it into a festive Roehampton mocktail.

And while Sorrel is deeply rooted in holiday tradition, it belongs at the table all year round—from everyday enjoyment to special occasions.

However you serve it, you’re sharing a drink with generations behind it and creating new occasions for the tradition to continue.
